The first metatarsophalangeal joint (1st MTPJ) is better known as the big toe joint. This is a common injury area of the foot, often associated with running or other activities that require us to be "on our toes". Examples of scenarios where injury to the big toe joint may occur include: field sports like football and soccer, dancing-especially ballet, martial arts kicks that strike with the ball of the foot, basketball, and even certain yoga poses that involve balancing on the toes.
