Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Sean Lee will miss the rest of the season due to a toe injury. It has been announced that Lee has a severe case of turf toe, which is a sprain of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ), or big toe joint. In Lee's case, the injury resulted in torn ligaments, which will require surgery.
Turf toe got its name from its association with sports played on artificial turf. Turf toe is a common sports injury, especially in sports that require cutting such as football, soccer, and lacrosse. In addition to the artificial turf factor, the increased amount of force around the the first MTPJ while cutting and running puts a great deal of stress on the first MTPJ. Photo (c) Getty Images.
